Wrist exercises are an amazing form of exercises that can compliment almost any sport (except for perhaps soccer).
I would like to take a moment to focus on these often overlooked yet very important type of exercises.
When people look to incorporate strength training to compliment their specific sport, they tend to focus primarily on major muscle groups such as chest, backs and legs.
And this is ok if you’re looking to build your overall strength and fitness levels, but what if your sport requires more than that? What if you want to gain a competitive edge over your competition that your general strength and fitness routine just can’t provide?
Perhaps you play a sport that uses a lot of forearm, wrist and grip strength such as golf, tennis, baseball, boxing or even arm wrestling. This is where sports specific wrist training becomes especially important. Wrist exercises are just one of those type of sports specific exercises that you can apply to help give you that edge you need.

Well, let’s just assume you’re into boxing. If you’ve ever hit the heavy bag for long period of time and were unfortunate enough to catch it at the wrong angle only to have your closed fist collapse on impact, you will have to agree that it is not a pleasant experience. And I’ve know of more than a handful of pro boxers who have been sidelined due to such accidents and in many cases they have not even been able to compete for months due to sever wrist stain.
Now, the sad fact is that a lot of these injuries could have been avoided. Sure, wrist wraps will provide a certain degree of support, but you simply cannot beat strong wrists that can support themselves. This is where wrist exercises come into play. Not only will wrist exercises serve to increase grip strength and wrist stability, but they will also lower the risk of injury.
There are many types of exercises that you can do, such as reverse forearm barbell curls, kettlebell curls, gripstik twists and even types of stretching exercises can help dramatically improve wrist stability and help prevent injuries. The important point is to just get started and build them into your training routine as you go along.
So whether you’re a serious hockey player of even just enjoy hours of fishing on the weekend, the benefits of wrist exercises are just too many to overlook.
